“The Shape of Water” – Guillermo del Toro’s latest and possibly strangest film?

The first trailer invites us to consider a relationship forged between a mute cleaner, Sally Hawkins, and a captive water based creature played by Doug Jones in costume as a fish-man that is being held in a high security lab in the cold war era 1963. He played a similar role as Abe Sapien in “Hellboy”. This might even be del Toro’s attempt to tell Abe’s story as he didn’t get the chance to do Hellboy 3.
At first glance, you might expect this to be a sci-fi horror movie and with the gothic sets, you are never quite sure what to expect. Conveying an eye for beauty and romance in what others might perceive as grotesque, we realise that this is, in fact, a love story. It’s often a strange exploration of the heart and motivation of perceived monsters with del Toro who invites you to review your ideas on what is good and what is bad. I would suggest that you let the music in the trailer guide you and I am betting that you’ll probably feel the film’s journey from start to finish.
You can feel the imagination of Tim Burton with the style of Jean-Pierre Jeunet in his films but, in fairness, Guillermo del Toro is a talent in own right with a sensibility for finding light from darkness.
The film also stars Octavia Spencer, Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins and Michael Stuhlbarg.
